Miniature Cattleya Orchid
In this watercolor project, we’ll paint a vibrant miniature Cattleya orchid featuring rich orange petals that transition into warm yellow highlights and a deep red, ruffled lip. This flower offers an excellent opportunity to explore how saturated color can be balanced with subtle temperature shifts, and how to suggest velvety petal texture through controlled wet‑into‑wet work.
The project emphasizes timing washes for soft diffusion, building luminous color through transparent layers, and shaping the orchid’s sculptural form with carefully placed shadows. The surrounding leaves and aerial roots provide additional practice in rendering smooth gradients, natural greens, and organic line movement. This subject encourages close observation, confident brushwork, and sensitivity to color harmony.
